Due to a spate of Telecom spectrum scams Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telecom watch dog, has decided to adopt new plans for 2g spectrum. Currently Telecom Operators have limited spectrum with them in their respective operating circles. This spectrum for GSM mobile carriers is 6.2 MHz and for CDMA carriers it is 5 MHz.
Indias telecom commission has accepted TRAI’s proposal to limit the spectrum to just 6.2 MHz for GSM operators and 5 MHz for CDMA operators. This will mean that there will be more network congestion, call drops and poor quality of voice calls. The biggest hit will be the big players like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone as they have a very big subscriber base. Limited spectrum will mean that they will have a poor quality. A solution to this has been suggested by TRAI that is for using extra spectrum. For using extra spectrum Telecom Companies will have to pay a one time fee. The fee has not yet been disclosed but it will definitely be a huge amount. The fee will also depend on the amount of spectrum used by the Telecom Company. If the telecom companies buy the extra spectrum then they will indirectly charge their subscribers. In any circumstance the subscribers will pay the price. If the telecom companies decided not to buy the extra spectrum then subscribers will get poor service. If the telecom companies decide to buy the spectrum then they will charge the subscribers.
Now it is TRAIs responsibility to see to it that the subscribers are not exploited and it should find a way out of this situation in such a way that there are no controversies and the rights of subscribers are not exploited.
